EXPERIENCE THAT COUNTS: After resigning late last year from his assemblymember position representing California AD-25 in order to run for a Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors (and losing), Kansen Chu is back. He’s running for his old seat against newcomer Asian American incumbent Alex Lee , who is seeking reelection. Upon Chu’s announcement of his bid for election, Assemblymember Lee responded that “In eight months in the assembly, we’ve done more than Chu has in his six years. And we’re just getting started.”
Should experience matter? Twitter seems to disagree. Chu was forced to create a new account for this election campaign but has gained little traction. With only 50 followers, he has no likes on posts that advocate for “experience that counts.” In addition, his campaign video, now unlisted, only has 6 views. He has very little support from people on Twitter, with one user even pointing his racist comments against Hispanics.
Unlike the last election, when he received the majority of endorsements, this time he only has the support of some local lawmakers. Alex Lee, on the other hand, is endorsed by Dave Min , Ash Kalra , Evan Low , and the API Legislative Caucus to name a few. Alex Lee has over 10k followers on Twitter and dozens of likes on each of his tweets, from endorsements to events. Kansen Chu is the only person on Twitter advocating for “experience that counts.” Maybe Lee’s eight-month tenure is all the experience he needs. Of course, all the data so far may be different if reapportionment changes the district boundaries.
